Google Launched Its Android Earthquake Alert System in Pakistan

The tech giant Google announced on Tuesday (19th of July 2022) the launch of its earthquake alerting system for Pakistan, which aims to detect seismic activity that can help people deal with impending emergencies.

"Android Earthquake warning System is a helpful and free feature on Android devices that can detect and warn people about earthquakes around the globe. This system uses sensors in Android based smartphones," Google said in a statement.

This system provides instant information to Google search. "When internet users are searching for 'earthquake near me' or 'earthquake,' they will find results related to their search, as well as helpful resources about action plan after an earthquake,"

The users who don't want to receive these alerts can turn off notifications in their android device's settings.

"In the past, Pakistan has experienced many earthquakes, the most affected parts of the country were northern and western regions. With the extension of this earthquake warning system, Android users in Pakistan can receive automatic early warning alerts which will be helpful to prepare for any emergency situations.

As per the Google statement, the system will display two types of alerts based on the intensity & magnitude of the earthquake.

One feature with the title "Be Aware" warns people when earthquakes of level 3, 4, or 4.5 magnitudes occur on the MMI scale. The notification is sent along with the distance to the epicenter of the earthquake. This alert uses the android device's current volume, Do Not Disturb, and vibration settings.

Conversely, a Second key feature called "Take Action" is a full-screen warning for earthquakes that have a greater intensity of level 4.5 and above magnitude on the MMI scale.

"To help people to make necessary arrangements for possible heavy shaking, instructions are displayed on full-screen followed by a loud sound played on the android devices.

New Zealand and Greece were among the first countries where The Android earthquake Alert system was launched.

Currently, this (Android Earthquake Alert System) is available in many countries including Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Philippines, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, the United States of America, and Uzbekistan.
